Spaces is totally far out next generation facebook interaction like no-one could have imagined just a few years ago. Although some subjects may invite those viewers ‘outside’ the experience to perceive the overlay of cartoon avatars as a bad mix of media suggesting ‘disaster tourism’ in some circumstances as mentioned, facebook might want to consider creating a simple option to make avatars invisible or a sillohouette to lessen the toontown affect with sensitive subject matter. I have used facebook Spaces and enjoyed the experience with friends however I do have reservations about how it all comes across in the real world once you go live. I think it points out a problem with the AR mixed reality concept and it is just that; mixing realities so distinctly different with different laws of physics and social protocols – can avatars really hang out with real people? any more than can clothed people hang out comfortably with nudists? Mark Twain observed correctly that naked people have little or no influence on society… perhaps cartoon avatars suffer a similar view. If I recall, Google Glass suffered an early social backlash from people not in on the experience. Mixing social spheres, (like your work and home life), may lessen immersion for both the person in VR and as we’ve seen, send mixed signals to those outside the experience. In this way AR may not be able to satisfy full VR immersion or full participation. facebook Spaces is a valid testing ground of course and we’ll see over time.
